The Greek Loanwords gypsi, ypsi, and epalxis, or How Constantine of Kostenec Used Commentaries on the Song of Songs in His Original Compositions?

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses a South Slavonic version of the Greek catena containing commentaries on the Song of Song by Theodoret of Cyrrhus, the so-called Three Fathers, and Michael Psellus. Its translation survives only in one Slavonic copy of the fifteenth century kept in the Rila Monastery, Bulgaria. A short version of this translation was produced, possibly in the first quarter of the fifteenth century at Belgrade. Constantine of Kostenec used images and expressions, including bookish loanwords, from the Slavonic version of the catena in his Skazanie iz'javljeno о pismenexb and in his Vita of Stefan Lazarevic. The paper discusses the role of these learned elements in his compositions.
