Summary/Abstract: I read the second number of the journal Perpjekja, which has started publication in Tirana under the direction of Fatos Lubonja, after a regrettable delay. When I finished reading it, I felt joy that our national life finally possesses a journal of the kind that we have missed since Faik Konica's Albania, a journal that the standard of our culture requires. I say this about Perpjekja because the aim of its publisher is to encourage "a critical spirit in Albanian culture," a spirit that generally has been greeted in our political and cultural life with barrages from all sides, from party hacks, ideologists of every colour, and the folklorists. Fatos Lubonja calls this spirit, the "yeast of development and emancipation,:' and so is it has been considered most of the time in the gre-at European cultures. If they had not cultivated a critical spirit in their political and cultural lives, and created critical cultural exemplars, the great European peoples would not be where they are today, and would not have succeeded in becoming models for the political and economic thinking and organisation of the peoples of the world.
