| Summary: |
The still unedited Jaiminīyasaṃhitā (JaiSa) is a purāṇic work, which claims to be the madhyama-bhāga of the Brahmāṇdapurāṇa (BdP). In the framework of an advaitic account (JaiSa 46-51), the muni Asita teaches king Janaka the embryo’s development. This paper analyses this embryological teaching, from the point of view of intertextuality, in order to determine the possible sources of the JaiSa. From this study, it appears that the text of the JaiSa is very close to the Yājñavalkyasmṛti (III, 72-82) and its commentary, the Mitākṣarā of Vijñānevara. If the JaiSa actually borrowed from the Mitākṣarā, which seems to be the most acceptable hypothesis in the present stage of our researches, the composition of the JaiSa should be situated between the XIIth and the XIVth c. A.D. |
